[Editorial] Our twenty-five year journey
Abstract
This August issue marks the 25th anniversary of The Lancet Infectious Diseases. The journal was created in 2001 by our late Editor-in-Chief John McConnell whose vision for a journal for specialists in infectious diseases that could inform public health decisions and clinical practice is alive to this day. John's curiosity and conviction that an infectious cause could always be found at the root of most medical problems shaped the growth of the journal from an initial collection of reviews to the multifaceted publication it is now.
Clinical relevance
This is not a primary research study; the editorial does not pose a clinical research question but rather reflects on the 25-year history and editorial mission of The Lancet Infectious Diseases since its founding in 2001. __SNAPSHOT__ {"studyDesign":"Editorial / Anniversary commentary — not an original research study; no experimental or observational design.","setting":"Not applicable (journal editorial office, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, August 2026 anniversary issue).","sampleSize":"Not applicable.","population":"Not applicable. Key findings
This piece is an institutional editorial commemorating the 25th anniversary of The Lancet Infectious Diseases, first published in August 2001 under founding Editor-in-Chief John McConnell. No quantitative data, effect sizes, p-values, confidence intervals, or clinical outcomes are reported. The editorial describes the journal's evolution from an initial review-focused publication to a multidisciplinary journal spanning clinical practice and public health policy. No statistical findings are present, and none can be calculated from the abstract.
Practice implications
Because this is an editorial and not an original research article, it establishes no clinical evidence and should not be used to guide clinical decision-making. Its value lies in contextualizing the journal's role in shaping infectious disease clinical practice and public health discourse over 25 years. Clinicians may find it useful as a reference point for understanding the editorial philosophy and scope of one of the field's leading peer-reviewed journals. Only the abstract was available for review; the full editorial may contain additional reflections or data not captured here. __LIMITATIONS__ 1. Not a research study — no methods, no patient population, no comparator, no outcome data, and no statistical analysis. 2. Inherently subject to institutional and editorial bias as a self-reflective anniversary piece authored by the journal itself. 3. Only the abstract was available; the full editorial text was not accessible for review, preventing complete characterization of its content. 4. No peer-reviewed empirical claims are made, so standard methodological critique (blinding, confounding, generalizability) does not apply. __BOTTOM_LINE_CATEGORY__ not_ready_for_clinical_application __BOTTOM_LINE__ This is a 25th anniversary editorial from The Lancet Infectious Diseases reflecting on the journal's founding and evolution; it contains no original clinical data and does not alter clinical practice. Clinicians should not apply this editorial as evidence for any diagnostic or therapeutic decision. It may be of interest as professional and historical context for the infectious diseases field.
