Education Leadership in Accreditation Reform—Reply

Abstract

In Reply We appreciate Drs Weinstein and Thibault’s and Dr Rajput’s thoughtful responses and agree that reform of accreditation focusing on outcomes and stewarded by physicians and educators must be part of the task of accrediting organizations at this time. The focus on GME raised by Weinstein and Thibault further articulates the ongoing silos and differences between GME and undergraduate medical education, particularly noting the various regulatory bodies, privacy, and data-definition challenges that impede meaningful data sharing. We strongly agree that these obstacles must be overcome in the current environment and should be prioritized. Rajput appropriately notes that accreditation (for institutions) and licensing and certification (for individuals) must be considered within the full complexity of the physician workforce and the current siloed approach to oversight.
