[Comment] Strengthening pre-spillover surveillance: the missing link in Ebola preparedness
Abstract
We read with concern the recent declaration of the Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) outbreak in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a public health emergency of international concern and the accompanying analysis by Thirumalaisamy P Velavan and colleagues,1 published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, which rightly identifies under-detection and delayed reporting as the Achilles’ heel of the current Ebola response. The authors propose decentralised field molecular testing and assert that a pan-orthoebolavirus vaccine is essential.
